Not bad in the long run

Review Date: April 26, 2006
Reviewer: C. S. Anderson, Columbia SC
I purchased a like model back in 2003. I have used the machine on a daily basis for about an hour a day (sometimes two)(I used to run track until arthritis set in). For the price this machine excels. This machine is really designed for light to moderate use, anything more, and you will learn very quickly that is can't handle the stress. If I had to choose from all of the current selling models that Horizen sells, this series would be my first choice.

I have spent a considerable period of time maintaining my machine. Upon my purchase both arm bearing burned out within about six months. Horizen supposedly redesigned the bearing to be more durable, and since that time I haven't had any problems. One thing I can say is buy a bottle of silicon, and occasionally disassemble the arms from the machine, lubricating where the arms connect with the body of the machine. This will save you a whole lot of hassle and down time. The main reason, I recommend this machine over the new models, is for the ease of maintenance. I'm not the best handy man, but a simple wrench and silicon are all you need to maintain the machine (the first time you take it apart, you will have to find a special pair of pliers for a small ring. Leave the ring off, and maintenance is a lot easier, just be forewarned not to push out, away from the machine to hard). The newer models are more encased in layers of added material. They also have more parts, which adds to the complexity of any repairs that might need to be done. The tracks and wheels can be lubricated with silicon, and that will cut done on the noise considerably. The fan on the machines will burn out withen a year, if you need a fan, get a cheap one to hook onto the machine, don't rely on the one provided.

Be forewarned, that Horizen parts and maintenance guarantee, is nothing to be excited about. They will ship parts for a year, but when it comes to getting a person out to your house to fix it, it might take two to three weeks (they rely on local people and sometimes it take a while to find somebody that will fix it). Learn yourself to fix the machine, or find somebody that will. For your future reference: if you need parts after that, then you will have to purchase them. Its not to bad price wise, but just be forewarned that you will have to buy parts, such as bearing etc (looked all over the place for similar padded washers, and was never able to find anything like the ones on the machine).

The only other recommendation is get a mat to put under it. The silicon and dust associated with that, can make quite a mess.

Overall, for the price, it is an investment for your health well worth it.
Great value for the money

It's no Precore, but considering the price, this elliptical is probably one of the best values out there. It's got the features that really matter (quiet, smooth operation, 20 resistance levels, heart-rate monitor, calorie counter, etc.) and none of the gimmicks (like a fan or speakers). It took about an hour to assemble, and has performed great. If you're looking in the under-$1,000 range for a good elliptical, you can't wrong with the Horizon E-52.
Awesome for the $$$$$

I purchased the Horizon E52 after much research. They have one of the BEST warranties for this level of product. Amazon had it delivered earlier than expected. In fact, I received it even before the original ship date! You will need help with assembly but all in all I think it took us less than 2 hours.

I've used the machine for a little longer than a month and it runs great! I would suggest an equiment mat when you purchase an elliptical just for vibration purposes. But it's not too noisy. I do have to turn up the TV a bit, but no big deal. The resistance levels are great too. And there are four different programs which I enjoy too. Obviously this is not a PRECOR gym level machine. But I don't think I could have gotten a better product for the $$$.

We like the E52 Elliptical Trainer, it is easy to use. It was easy to assemble. There have been two issues we have had with the machine. Our feet slip and we are constantly adjusting them. We tried putting on a non skid material but this did not help. The other problem we are having is while exercising the display panel quits. It is securely plugged in so I am not sure why this is happening.
Some headache getting it but a GOOD machine

I don't know what had happend to this order. Usually Amazon is good with their shipping; however I odered this machine on the 24 of Aug. and recieved it on the 8th of Sep..

The assembly came with some problem, the main shaft was bent and it did not allow me to place the mast inside, so I resorted to a hammer and pliers. After that everything was a breeze (it also helps if you have your own tools, it would make it a lot faster than those provided).

When I finally got onto the machine, it was GREAT. I'm used to using a Precor machine at the gym, and this does not stand up to it; but for a home gym at a resonable price I'm definately glad I bought this. I have it on a level floor (that helps a lot) so it does not "wobble", the resistance is great, NEEDS a water bottle holder, few but effective programs, and it's quiet.

I would recommend this to someone.

About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

About Treadmills
Walking is still considered one of the most beneficial cardiovascular exercises for people of all ages, body types, and fitness levels. As a fundamental form of aerobic training, walking has numerous physical benefits for the heart, lungs, and circulatory system, while also increasing muscle tone and burning fat calories. Treadmills provide a convenient way to regularly exercise in all weather conditions in the comfort and safety of your own home.

From beginners just starting an exercise regimen to advanced athletes looking to maintain their fitness level, anyone interested in getting and staying in shape can benefit greatly from regular use of a treadmill. Treadmills allow you to determine the pace, distance, and complexity of the workout based on your needs, all while watching television, talking on the telephone, or reading a magazine. Much easier on sensitive joints like the knees and hips, treadmill walking and running surfaces are typically long, padded platforms that allow ample room for a long stride and comfortable, low-impact walk or jog without the harsh contact of a concrete surface.

While many different types, styles, and price ranges of treadmills exist, many of them offer unique features like a fold-up design for easy storage, an electronic display monitor showing speed, distance, workout time, incline level, and burned calories, and EKG grip pulses to monitor the heart rate while exercising. Regardless of the simple to complex features you may choose, treadmills offer an array of aerobic exercise opportunities that will provide long-lasting beneficial cardiovascular results without a commute to the gym or a jog in the rain.

Product Description

Enjoy the benefits of a total body workout with little impact on your joints and back with the LifeSpan Fitness EL1000 elliptical trainer. Outfitted with an 18-inch stride length and narrow 2.5-inch pedal spacing, the EL1000 supports your natural walking motion, with converging handlebars that let your arms flow naturally as you exercise. For added comfort, the space between the treadmill's handlebars narrows as you extend your arms forward and then widens as you swing them by your side. And users with small homes or apartments will love the EL1000's space-saving design, which is far smaller than commercial models. The trainer even includes a pair of front-mounted wheels, so you can roll it from room to room.

The multicolored LCD console tracks your time, distance, calories, and more.
The real centerpiece of the EL1000, however, is the multicolored LCD console, which offers several motivating display readings and exercise programs to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. The display tracks your time, calories, distance, heart rate, speed, and resistance level, making it easy to track your workout progress. More importantly, the trainer offers eight preset workout programs that help you vary your workout--a critical factor for people trying to get in shape. The programs include weight management (steady pace and uphill walk), heart health (ladder and interval), uphill intervals, pyramid climbs, rolling hills, and plateau climbs. Each preset program offers your choice of three different intensity levels, with the ability to increase or decrease the resistance load during the workout. The interval programs are particularly challenging, as they alternate between a higher intensity level and a short recovery period, which helps maximize the total number of calories burned.

The EL1000 includes an 8-inch step height for easy on/off.
In addition to the eight preset programs, the trainer offers two My Zone heart rate control programs and two custom programs. The My Zone Constant program keeps your heart rate at a constant level--thereby using your heart rate as a fitness tool--while the My Zone Interval program lets you enter your own minimum and maximum hear rate. As you exercise, the pedaling resistance will automatically adjust to keep your heart rate at the preferred level. By contrast, the custom programs are fully adaptable to your favored workout formula. That's because you're in charge of setting the resistance level for each of the 20 program segments, and then saving them for future use. Other details include large soft-touch keys, an 8-inch step-up height that makes it easy to get on and off the trainer, and an adjustable handlebar position for added comfort.

The EL1000 measures 52 by 61 by 28 inches (W x H x D), supports up to 300 pounds, and carries the following warranties: lifetime on the frame and brake, three years on parts, and one year on labor.

Specifications:

  • Stride Length: 18 inches

  • Step-Up Height: 8 inches
  • Resistance System: Magnetic eddy current brake
  • Heart Rate: Contact Heart rate pulse grips
  • Handlebars: Converging, ergonomic handlebars
